St Kitts...
St Kitts captures every aspect of what may be deemed your typical Caribbean getaway, mountainous backdrops and postcard worthy beaches. For anyone who's even half the cricket fan that I am there is no where better to go and watch the game where the atmosphere just cannot be replicated, the way the West Indian locals get immersed in the sun, music and of course a fair amount of rum!
With a population of just over 35,000 St Kitts is one of the smallest of the Caribbean Islands both by area and population but in no way does it make it any less special, the exceptionally laid back locals only add to the islands charm.
Despite the size of the island you'll never be short of places to explore. One of the best recommendations we had was to go to a tiny little restaurant called Salt Plage in Christophe Harbour. The excellent quality of food and cocktails accompanied by a sunset that has to be seen to be believed!
Where we stayed at the Marriott in Frigate Bay was the perfect mix between relaxation and being in walking distance of restaurants and bars for any evening entertainment, giving us more than enough choice.
However the primary reason for our visit was the cricket...which has become the main reason for my various travels around the world. We were there to see England's first 2 warm up games in preparation for the 3 test series against the West Indies. The match held at Warner Park didn't attract huge numbers in the crowd but that by no means decreased the atmosphere...even an impromptu thunder storm only gave the locals the opportunity to showcase their musical talents using only chairs, wooden spoons and pretty much anything else they were able to get their hands on!
England came away with victories in both of the games against local teams with some of the England players turning out for the opposition in order to maximise preparation for the upcoming games.
Overall if you're looking for a quiet, relaxing break with plenty of sun, and lots to do there isn't many more tranquil islands than St Kitts!
